The Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum on Primorsky Boulevard is one of the most recognizable architectural symbols of modern Baku.
The museum building, made in the original shape of a rolled-up carpet, was designed by Austrian architect Frans Janss and opened to the public in 2014. The museum was founded in 1967 to study and popularize the ancient art of carpet weaving in Azerbaijan, which was included in UNESCO's list of masterpieces of intangible cultural heritage in 2010. The family tradition of the craft is still being perpetuated in various regions of the country and has been passed on from generation to generation. Today, the Carpet Museum presents more than 6,000 exhibits that constitute the world’s largest collection of Azerbaijani carpets. A significant part of the exhibited samples belongs to the XVII-XX centuries and represents different styles and schools of carpet weaving. Visitors can get acquainted with the secrets of carpet weaving art presented in the works of seven regional schools, and decipher bright and complex patterns on carpets, which tell a lot about the culture, history and nature of different areas. In the exhibition hall you can observe the work of folk craftswomen who weave carpets, as well as take part in the process of carpet weaving.
